  • Sound Places Workshop with Byron Westbrook

This workshop will experiment with using field recordings as an instrument with a group exercise exploring how the recording process can operate as a performance. The group will visit the Grays Ferry Power Plant to record using hand-held recorders provided by the workshop. Machinery around the plant emits a loud hum that is very similar to a low B-flat musical note. Participants will explore the site to hear the different possibilities, listening to how the position of the recorder can change the sound of the hum and how motions and voice can mix in conjunction with the sounds of the environment to create a sound performance. All recordings will be played back together at the end of the session to be heard as an ensemble. Space is limited, please RSVP.
